5 Airplane Hacks That Will Make Your Flight More Enjoyable

There’s no doubt that flying can be a frustrating experience. From long security lines to cramped seats and children. OMG, the screaming children!  Yes, it’s easy to see why so many people hate flying, and yes, I’m right there with them.  But the good news is that there are a few things you can do to make your flight more enjoyable. In this post, I’ll share five airplane hacks and other travel hacks that will make your flight more enjoyable.

1. Choose Your Seat Wisely

When you’re booking your flight, make sure to choose your seat wisely. If you’re not comfortable with the thought of being crammed into a small space for hours on end, try to get a seat in the exit row or by the window. And if you’re traveling with a young child, be sure to ask for a seat with room to spare.  The cost to book a seat that is either window or aisle is rarely that high, and in many circumstances, worth it.  If you don’t book a specific seat prior to arriving at the airport, make sure you ask the gate agent if there is an option to move to one or the other if you’ve been placed in the middle.  It’s always worth asking, as the worst they can say is no. 

2. Morning Flights Have Less Turbulence

 The time of day that your flight takes off can make a big difference when it comes to turbulence. Morning flights tend to have less turbulence than afternoon and evening flights.  If you’re not fond of dropping several thousand feet at a time, choose the time of day when the air is smoother if you can.

3. Skip Carbonated Drinks

You’re probably aware of the general rule that you’re not supposed to drink too much on a flight, as it can lead to dehydration. But what you might not know is that carbonated drinks are an especially big no-no. The bubbles in carbonated drinks expand in your stomach, which can lead to discomfort and even pain. Not to mention, the caffeine and sugar can keep you awake and make you feel jittery on a long flight. So, if you want to stay comfortable and avoid feeling sick, skip the carbonated drinks and stick to water instead.  Personally, I stick with the wine (not a good tip, but my flights become way more entertaining that way).  I use my parents’ philosophy on this one: Do as I say and not as I do  😉

4. Be Cool with Flight Attendants

When you’re on an airplane, it’s important to be cool with the flight attendants. They’re working hard to ensure your flight is as comfortable as possible, so be sure to say hello and make small talk. They may be able to help you with luggage, getting a drink, or getting a seat change if necessary. Remember to smile.  It not only makes others happier, but it also helps make you happier in the process.  Try being in a bad mood and smiling at the same time.  It’s not easy to do, now, is it?  I always try to use the reap what I sow strategy.  If I’m projecting irritation and anger on others, I expect to get that back, but if I’m smiley and happy towards others, it’s a lot more likely I’ll receive the same in return.

5. Always Carry a Sweatshirt

One of the most important things to remember when you’re flying is to always carry a sweatshirt. Not only can it keep you warm on a cold flight, but it can also be used as a makeshift pillow or blanket. No matter where I travel to, I am always prepared for this just-in-case scenario.  The flights can fluctuate significantly in temperature, and it’s never any fun to be too hot or too cold as you hit the skies. Here’s a good one that will keep you nice and warm.


6. Invest in a Good Travel Pillow

Not only will it help you to get more rest, but it will also help to keep your head and neck in a more comfortable position. This pillow has made it on every long flight I’ve ever had.  It takes maybe 15 seconds and several breaths to blow up, but it’s a lifesaver.  Being able to rest my head in the forward position as it rests on my lap or tray table is priceless.  Now, if First Class is an option, that’d be even better, but for those of us who are sitting in the back, this pillow will be your new best friend.

7. Pack Essentials in Your Carry-on

When packing for your flight, it’s important to make sure you have everything you might need while in the air. That’s why packing your essentials in your carry-on is a must. Some things to pack in your carry-on include a change of clothes, your toiletries, snacks, headphones, books/movies/entertainment, medications, chargers/charging cables.

8. Dress in Comfortable Clothing

Number 8 Airplane Hacks; You’re going to be spending a lot of time in your clothes, so it’s important to wear something comfortable. Tight clothing can be constricting and is not the best choice for a long flight. A loose-fitting shirt and pants will allow you to move around easily and will help you to stay comfortable during your flight. Plus, you’ll be less likely to get a headache or feel bloated if you’re dressed comfortably.  I’ve never understood how anyone travels in heels and short skirts.  Call me impressed, as I’m not that cool.  I do believe there is something in trying to present yourself in a nice manner, as people respond much more positively, but try to do it in a way you can still be super comfortable.

Air travel can be a lot more enjoyable when you have some entertainment options to keep you occupied during the flight. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your in-flight entertainment systems and ensure you have a pleasant journey

Most airlines now offer in-flight entertainment systems with a wide selection of movies and TV shows. However, it’s a good idea to check the available options on your specific flight beforehand. Some airlines even allow you to download their entertainment content before your flight. By doing this, you can ensure you have access to your favorite films and series, even if the in-flight system doesn’t offer what you’re looking for.

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device): In addition to the airline’s entertainment, consider bringing your own device loaded with your preferred entertainment. This can be a tablet, e-reader, or laptop. Download e-books, digital magazines, or offline apps to keep you entertained during the flight.
