What Not to Pack For Iraq Tours And What You Should Know:

Avoid Packing Revealing Clothing:

Iraq is a predominantly conservative country with strong Islamic traditions. It is advisable to dress modestly, particularly in public areas or when Iraq tours religious sites. Avoid packing clothing that exposes too much skin or is overly provocative to respect local customs.  While on tour, burkas may or may not be required, depending on the area of town/region, but know that it could happen.

Don’t Bring Excessive Amounts of Cash:

While having some cash for your Iraq tours is essential, carrying excessive amounts can make you a target for theft or unwanted attention. It is recommended to have a mix of cash and alternative payment methods like credit cards or traveler’s checks.

Be Prepared to be Searched and Potentially Separated on Flights:

While exiting the country, flying out of Baghdad International Airport, I was separated from my boyfriend at the time, and we were placed into two lines to be searched along with everyone else getting on the plane.  Back in the day, it felt very, how does one say, Auschwitz style.  It definitely made me question my life choices at the time.  In addition, when we boarded the plane, they were placing the men at the back of the plane (Iraqi Airways) and women at the front unless you were “family”.  We explained that we were “family” and thankfully, they let us sit together.  When he tried to take his seat on the plane, the lady in the seat next to him requested the steward to make him not sit next to her and only I sit beside her a not-too-nice way.  The local customs are certainly very different than what we are used to, but if you know it could happen up front and are ready for them, you can adjust your mindset.

Leave Behind Controversial or Politically Sensitive Materials/Conversation:

Just don’t, man… leave politics as far behind as you can get them and just enjoy the culture.  Iraq has a complex political landscape, and it is best to avoid bringing any controversial or politically sensitive materials, including books, magazines, and documents, or engaging in conversation that could potentially cause misunderstanding or friction. You will not be the one that wins this argument!  Not sure about you, but time in an Iraqi jail just doesn’t sound like a good time to me.

Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance:

Before embarking on Iraq tours, it is crucial to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and other unforeseen circumstances. Double-check the policy to ensure it includes Iraq as a covered destination.

Avoid Packing Unnecessary Electronics:

While you may want to document your Iraq tours, it is advisable to avoid bringing unnecessary electronics or expensive gadgets that may attract unwanted attention. Instead, consider bringing a basic smartphone or camera for capturing memories.

Leave Behind Alcohol and Drugs:

Iraq is a country with strict laws regarding alcohol and drugs. It is important to respect local regulations and avoid packing any substances that are prohibited or illegal. Additionally, refrain from consuming alcohol in public places. Meeting with your locals and being invited to their homes, can offer up plenty of experiences if you are in need of a sippy sip.

Learn Basic Arabic Phrases:

While English may be spoken in certain areas, having some basic knowledge of Arabic phrases can greatly enhance your experience and interactions with locals. Learn greetings, polite expressions, and simple phrases to show respect and facilitate communication.

Respect Cultural and Religious Practices:

Iraq has a rich cultural and religious heritage, and it is important to respect local customs. Familiarize yourself with the traditions, etiquette, and practices, such as removing shoes before entering homes or religious sites.  Just pay attention to what the locals do and do as they do!

Be Prepared for Varying Climates:

Iraq experiences different climates depending on the region and season. Pack accordingly with lightweight, breathable clothing for hotter regions and warmer layers for cooler areas. Don’t forget essentials like sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable walking shoes.

Best Tips for Iraq Tours

When planning Iraq tours, it’s essential to consider certain factors to ensure a safe and rewarding experience. They can provide guidance, support, and local knowledge, enhancing your travel experience and ensuring your safety. This is the “don’t be stupid” method.  Because our culture is so different, at least having the ability to ask questions and rely on others who can inform you of what to do and keep you in a bit of a controlled environment is what I recommend (at least for your first trip).  To learn, see, and do, but be safe while doing it. A few options: Ramses Tours TourDragon  Luxury Tours Research And Stay Informed: Stay updated on the current situation in Iraq and follow travel advisories from your country’s government.
