One of the greatest advantages of having a car is exploring hidden gems not listed in your typical travel guides. I took scenic drives along the coastline, discovering quaint fishing villages, pristine beaches, and charming roadside cafes. One memorable stop was at Playa Jibacoa, a stunning beach with crystal-clear waters and few tourists. It felt like a private paradise, and I wouldn’t have found it without the freedom that renting a car in Cuba provided.
One of the first stops on my journey was the Viñales Valley, a verdant paradise known for its stunning landscapes and traditional tobacco farms. The drive from Havana to Viñales was a mesmerizing experience, with rolling hills and limestone cliffs (known as mogotes) painting a beautiful backdrop. As I visited the local farms, I learned about the cigar-making process and even rolled a cigar myself. The warmth and hospitality of the local farmers were delightful, and the homemade Cuban meals they served were simply divine.
Driving to the west, I found Cayo Jutías, a secluded beach that felt like a private slice of paradise. The white sandy beaches and turquoise waters were breathtaking, and the fact that it was a popular destination made it even more special. I spent the day snorkeling, sunbathing, and indulging in fresh seafood at a little beachside shack. It was the perfect place to unwind and soak in the natural beauty of Cuba.
Heading south, I made my way to Trinidad, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its well-preserved colonial architecture. The cobblestone streets and pastel-colored buildings took me back in time. Trinidad’s vibrant music scene, lively markets, and historic museums provided a deep dive into Cuban culture. I highly recommend taking a stroll through Plaza Mayor and visiting the Museo Romántico for a glimpse into the city’s rich history.
One of the highlights of my trip was discovering El Nicho Waterfalls, located in the heart of the Escambray Mountains. The drive to El Nicho was an adventure in itself, with windy roads offering spectacular views of the lush mountains. Once there, I hiked through the verdant trails, surrounded by the sounds of nature. The waterfalls were stunning, falling into clear, natural pools where I went for a swim. It was a tranquil oasis, far away from the busy city life.
Just a short drive from Trinidad, I found Playa Ancón, known as one of the best beaches on Cuba’s southern coast. The white sand and calm, azure waters were perfect for a day of relaxation. I rented a catamaran and sailed along the coast, exploring nearby cays and enjoying the marine life. The sunsets at Playa Ancón were mesmerizing, casting a golden glow over the horizon and providing a perfect end to the day.
My journey then took me to Santa Clara, a city with a rich revolutionary history. Santa Clara is known for the iconic Che Guevara Mausoleum, Santa Clara offered a deep dive into Cuba’s history. Visiting the monument and museum dedicated to Che Guevara was a poignant experience, and the city’s art museum took us back in time. Walking through Parque Vidal, I felt the cheerful vibe of the people.
With a car, I could connect better with the local culture. I visited small towns like Viñales, where I toured tobacco farms and learned about traditional cigar-making. The drive through the lush Viñales Valley, with its limestone cliffs and verdant landscapes, was spectacular. In these rural areas, I had the chance to interact with locals, taste authentic Cuban cuisine, and experience the genuine hospitality that Cuba is known for.
Renting a car in Havana provides you with convenience and comfort to explore. I didn’t have to worry about carrying heavy luggage through crowded public transport or following up with bus schedules. My car became a comfortable ride where I could relax between sightseeing adventures. It also provided a safe space to store my belongings, making day trips and spontaneous detours hassle-free.

One of the first lessons I learned was the importance of booking your car well in advance. Car rentals in Cuba are in high demand, especially during peak tourist seasons. By reserving your vehicle ahead of time, you can ensure you get the type of car you want and avoid any last-minute disappointments.
Match Your Car to Your Travel Plans
When renting a car in Havana, it’s important to choose a vehicle that suits your travel plans. If you’re planning to stick to the cities and main roads, a standard sedan will do just fine. However, if you’re aiming to explore rural areas and more rugged terrain, consider renting a more robust vehicle like an SUV. This will give you the flexibility to navigate less-developed roads comfortably.
I recommend renting a classic car in Cuba, this will give you the backdrop for your pictures but you can also travel in style.

I made it a habit to refuel whenever my tank was half full, which kept me worry-free during long drives.
